Katie's Lead Blog Post Response

Deadpool is undoubtedly one of the best and most unique Marvel movies that are out right now. I love it because comedy plays a big part in the film and in the personality of the main character, Deadpool. Most other Marvel movies contain some comedy, though it is not heavily invested into any of the plots. Katie brings up some great points when bringing up benign violation theory and incongruity theory. I would first like to add on to Katie’s comments on benign violation theory in Deadpool. During the scene where Deadpool was sitting along the highway I noticed that Deadpool’s actions seemed to have an imbalance of violation and benign. I mean he talked about fondling Wolverine’s genitals for God’s sake. Yet, no one has ever been offended by Deadpool. So what is hidden in the scene that justifies his actions? I believe it is the stereotypes that lie within a superhero. A superhero is typically seen as a superior being who looks after a group of people with a sense of pride and maturity. Deadpool gets horny whenever he sniffs the smoke that comes out of his guns. Obviously, he has a unique personality which will constitute anything he does that is violating. For example, imagine if Thor would have used Deadpool’s lines in his movie. I predict that the audience would not take too kindly to this given Thor’s godly and respectable reputation. Deadpool on the other hand can do whatever he wants because even though he possesses these powers he still acts like a normal citizen. I also agree with Katie’s comments on incongruity in the movie. Many of the things Deadpool says at many times does not correlate with his actions. Overall, Katie’s analysis of Deadpool was very interesting and I’m glad I could add on to her ideas.

  1. I loved how you made the connection between Deadpool and Thor. It's not a connection that I would have put together, but it makes complete sense.

  2. That's a good point that it's not exactly benign, and even perhaps imbalanced from the point of view of the theory. So that fact that he is just a normal guy, sort of, seems to be a way, not of making it benign, but making it endearing at least.
